First there was a warning letter issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration followed by lawsuits!

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals have been subject to lawsuits regarding the safety of its popular birth control pill, Yaz and Yasmin.  These came after Bayer had agreed to run a 20 million dollar corrective campaign.  The corrective campaign was necessary because Bayer had overstated the benefits of both Yaz and Yasmin.

The main issue that the FDA had with Bayer is that it contains progestin drospirenone, which can increase potassium levels.  This inherently makes both Yaz and Yasmin carry additional risks when compared to other birth control pills.

When an FDA letter like this is released it serves as handy evidence in any lawsuit!  While over promoting the benefits of the drug Yaz and Yasmin the women who have taken it have been subject to an increased risk of injury, most notably increased risk of blood clots.  This is all the while Bayer and doctors were overpromoting the benefits of the drug.
